Lucy Hodges Fuller passed away at the age of 96 on March 1, 2018 at Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital. The widow of Dr. William Allen Fuller, Sr., she was born on December 11, 1921 to Thomas Edward and Caroline Armistead Hodges. She was the fifth of six children and the fourth girl. For this, she was immediately nicknamed “Calamity.” Today, friends and family still refer to her as “Lamb.” She received her BA in Social Work from Sweet Briar College, and at the age of 50, when her children were out of the house, she earned her Master’s Degree in Reading from the University of Virginia and taught for a number of years in the Halifax County Public School System. She loved horseback riding, square dancing, gardening, golf and was an avid Duplicate and Contract Bridge player. She enjoyed membership in the Banister River Garden Club, the Halifax Woman’s Club and the DAR. She was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church. A long time member and past President of Halifax Regional Hospital Auxiliary, she especially enjoyed participating in hospital follies with her husband Allen. Together they also enjoyed classical music, opera, art, theater and family vacations at Virginia Beach. She is survived by her son Allen and wife Wendy of Chapel Hill, NC; daughter Beverly and husband Steve Hope of Charlotte, NC; son Armistead and wife Marion of Skipwith, VA; son West and wife Jan of Richmond, VA; and daughter Lucy Byrd Fuller of Halifax. She is also survived by friends and companions Martha Reed and Edna Fields. Survivors also include her grandchildren and great grandchildren: Caroline Hope Griffith, her husband Chad and daughter Olivia of Raleigh, NC; Maggie Hope Meyer and her husband Mike of Nashville, TN; Lucy Byrd Hope and her partner Zack Rollins of Raleigh, NC; Burton Fuller, his wife Anne Bev and twins Ellen and Sutton of Richmond, VA; Ruth Fuller and partner Michael Schmid of Austin, TX; Kara Schrinel, husband Chris and daughters Kinsley and Kate of Glen Allen, VA; Eric Brankley of Keysville, VA; Heath Brankley, wife Jade and daughter Miranda of Chase City, VA ; Eddie Fuller and fiancée Megan Terry of Richmond, VA; Anne Fuller of Richmond, VA; Heidi Hoover, husband John and children Isabelle and John Perdue of Atlanta, GA; Alex Stein and wife Liz of Richmond, VA; and Kevin Stein, partner Lauren Brooks and his daughters Caydence and Addalynne of Richmond, VA. A graveside service will be conducted by the Rev. Dr. Susan Grimm on Saturday, March 24, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. at the Armistead Family Cemetery in Lennig, VA (call Powell Funeral Home for directions).
