John Henry Salley

Mr. John Henry Salley of Halifax, VA passed away Tuesday, January 16, 2018 at the Commonwealth Assisted Living in South Boston, VA.  He was born March 20, 1925 in Halifax County, VA and was 92 years old.  He was the son the late Charles Edward Salley and the late Annie Coleman Reeves Salley and was married to the late Evelyn Allen Stone Salley.   He was a retired Civil Engineer with the Army Corps of Engineers. He was a WWII Army veteran serving in the Pacific theater of operations, from 1943 to 1946 in th4e Coastal Artillery at the entrance to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.  He graduated from VPI (Virginia Tech) in 1950 with a degree in Civil Engineering. Subsequently, he worked as a civil engineer with the Inter American Geodetic Survey in Central and South America, DuPont Co. in North Carolina and New Jersey, Burton and Hanlon, Inc. (J.E. Burton Construction), South Boston, VA, City of Danville, VA, Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Norfolk, VA, from which he retired in 1988 as Chief of the Civil Engineering Section in the Design Branch.  He was a member of American Legion Post 8 and a member of Dan River Baptist Church, a past member of Great Bridge Baptist Church, Chesapeake, VA and Woodberry Hills Baptist Church, Danville, VA. He served as an active deacon in Dan River and Woodberry Hills churches and taught teen age boys Sunday school classes in all three churches. He was a 39 year resident of the Great Bridge section of Chesapeake, VA.        Mr. John Henry Salley is survived by: One DaughterAnn S. Young (Steven) of Natural Bridge, VA One SonJohn H. Pekala (Patrick) and Jennifer Y. Gillespie (David) Two great granddaughters, Logan Evelyn Ann Pekala and Sharon Evelyn Salley Three great grandsons Ethan Pekala, Aiden Gillespie, and Blake David Salley A number of special nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews   ***Preceded in death by*** One sister, Margaret H. SalleyTwo brothers, James R. (Jim Bob) Salley and Charles E. Salley, Jr.   Funeral services will be held Sunday, January 21, 2018 at 2:00 P.M. at the Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Doug Gibson officiating.  Military honors will be held at Powell Funeral Home following the service. Burial will be private.
