Mr. George Dewey Vaughan, Sr. of Halifax, Virginia passed away on November 14, 2017 at Sentara Woodview in South Boston, Va. He was born in Halifax County, Va. on October 10, 1924 and was 93 years old. He was the son of the late Greer Walter Vaughan and Maude Langford Vaughan and was married to the late Elsie Long Vaughan. Mr. Vaughan was a US Navy Veteran of World War II and longtime retail merchant in Halifax and South Boston, owning and operating furniture, appliance, clothing and auto parts businesses. He was a member of Beth Car Baptist Church. He was an avid golfer and hunter in his earlier years and was not afraid to tackle any project, whether designing or constructing. Mr. George Vaughan is survived by his three sons: George Dewey "Buddy" Vaughan, Jr. of Halifax and wife Hannah with sons George Dewey Vaughan, III of Bradenton, Florida, Aaron Greer Vaughan of Midlothian, and Joshua Evan Vaughan of Charlotte, NC. Maurice Stephen Vaughan of South Boston and wife Patsy with daughters Jessica Anne Vaughan and Dale Loftis with great grandchild, Nathaniel Hugh Loftis of Halifax and Melissa Vaughan Woods and husband David Woods of Norfolk. Michael Gary Vaughan of Pfafftown, NC and wife Bonita with sons Justin Michael Vaughan of Charlotte, NC and Ryan Gary Vaughan of Winston-Salem, NC. He is also survived by one sister, Dorothy Vaughan Martin of Richmond. He was preceded in death by his sisters: Virginia Bracy, Mae Butler, Margarette Ritt, Gladys Snead, Nora Throckmorton and brothers: Andrew Vaughan, Ben Vaughan, Dennis Vaughan, Edd Vaughan, and Roy Vaughan. The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home, 1603 Wilborn Avenue, South Boston, Va. on November 17 , 2017 from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M. and other times at the home on 1088 Mountain Road, Halifax, Va. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 18, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. at Beth Car Baptist Church, 25 Church Street, Halifax, Va. with Rev. Dr. Ridge Cullum officiating. Burial will follow at Halifax Memorial Gardens with Military Rites.
