Sylvia McCurry

Mrs. Sylvia Whitlow McCurry of Nathalie, VA, passed away October 15, 2017 at her home.  She was born in Halifax County VA on July 14, 1928 and was 89 years of age.  She was the daughter of the late George H. Whitlow and Gladys Whitt Whitlow.  She was married first to the late Carroll Compton, and then to the late Arthur McCurry. She was a member of Black Walnut Baptist Church. She was a graduate of Cluster Springs High School in 1947.  Her hobby was cross-stitching and her volunteer work consisted of making cupcakes for various fund raisers. She did volunteer work at the VA Hospital in Mountain Home, TN and was a long time member of the VFW, member of the Disabled American Veteran's in Johnson City, TN.  Sylvia Whitlow McCurry is survived by: Three daughters Wynona Compton Childress of Hurt, VA Shawna Compton Krohn and husband Mark of Vancleave, MS Emma Compton Layne of Cody, VA Step-children Nicky McCurry of Ashland Ohio Maxine McCurry of Johnson City Tennessee Grandchildren Rachel Booker Harrison and husband Mason of North Hollywood, CA Charity Compton Judio and husband of Lakeland, FL Three great grandchildren ***Preceded in death by*** One son Carroll Taza ComptonOne brotherFelton Whitlow One sister June V. Whitlow Funeral service will be held Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at 2:00 PM at the Powell Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Pat Nielson officiating.  Burial will be at Black Walnut Baptist Church Cemetery.  Visitation will be at Powell Funeral Home on Tuesday from 1:00 PM until service time at 2:00 PM.
