Joseph Abraham Carey, Jr.

Joseph Abraham Carey, Jr., age 80 of Halifax, Virginia, passed away at home Monday, October 2, 2017, surrounded by family, after years of courageously living with the symptoms of Progressive supranuclear palsy. He is preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Lucille Carey. Joe is survived by his loving wife of 57years, Sylvia Elizabeth Carey; sister Barbara Malnburg (Ed); daughter and son-in-law Stephanie and Richard Robertson; sons and daughter-in-law Christopher Neil, Michael Brian, Patrick Joseph and Kay Carey; grandchildren Christopher Carey, Jr. (Stephanie), Nicole Dunham (Travis), Jessica Carey, Cody Robertson (Abigail), Devin, Nicholas, Jeremy and Danielle Robertson, Amy and Sydney Bredehoft, and Reagan, Nicholas and Shea Carey; great-granddaughter Caroline Carey, great-grandson Brody Dunham; special niece Amy McBride, and golden retriever companion Marley. Joe was born in Knightstown, Indiana on November 24, 1936. His father, a military man, moved the family many times in Joe's growing years.  Fortunately, the last move was to San Benito, Texas where he later met his future wife, Sylvia.  Joe graduated from San Benito High School and headed to Purdue University where he earned a degree in Electrical Engineering and a commission in the United States Navy. Later he earned a Masters of Business Administration degree from Lamar University.  Following his Navy service, Joe started his thirty-five year career with Westinghouse and ABB culminating with his position as President and Chief Operating Officer of ABB Power T & D Company.  Still wanting to share his knowledge of business, Joe purchased a franchise, Renaissance Executive Forums, that helps presidents and owners of companies reach their business goals.  He successfully did this for twenty years until his PSP illness did not permit.  He was a lifelong learner and vociferous reader.  Joe loved his family, times spent at Hilton Head, Red Sox baseball games, and all things Purdue. Joe's family will receive friends from 3:00-5:00 p.m. Sunday, October 8, at Powell Funeral Home, 1603 Wilborn Ave., South Boston, VA  24592. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 noon Monday, October 9, at St. Paschal Baylon Catholic Church, 800 John Randolph Blvd., South Boston, VA 24592. Following the Mass, the family will have a gathering to further celebrate Joe's life at Berry Hill Resort and Conference Center, 3105 River Road, South Boston, VA 24592.
