Calvin Stover Powell

   Mr. Calvin Stover “Runt “Powell of South Boston, VA passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Saturday, August 19, 2017. He was born October 10, 1937 in South Boston, VA and was 79 years of age. Mr. Powell was the son of the late George Cleveland Powell and Eva Bliss Powell of South Boston. He was married to Diane Smiley Powell. Mr. Powell is survived by his wife, Diane Smiley Powell, of the home; two daughters and their husbands, Jennifer Powell Slagle and husband Garry Slagle; and Audrey Powell Warren and husband Troy Warren; five grandchildren, Allison Stevens, Bruce Slagle, Lindsey Slagle, Jenna Warren, and Vince Warren, all of South Boston; three sisters, Elsie P. Owen and Margaret P. Canada of South Boston and Mary Lee Smith of Scottsburg; one brother-in-law and his wife, Jimmy and Solvi Smiley of Clover; one sister-in-law and her husband, Roselane and Tommy Compton of Scottsburg and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends . Mr. Powell was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Vena Watts, Luther Powell, Pauline Hancock, Dorothy Lacks, Hallie Hackney, Wilson Powell, Lanier Canada, joseph Powell, Alton Powell, and Lillian Smith. Alongside his wife, Mr. Powell was the owner of Runt’s Store in the Wolf Trap Community for 49 years and was a member of Dan River Baptist Church where he served as teller for many years. Funeral Services will be held at Dan River Baptist Church on Wednesday, August 23, 2017 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Doug Gibson officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Following the burial, all friends and family are invited to a Celebration of Life and Visitation in the church’s fellowship hall.
