Elizabeth Anne Barksdale

Elizabeth Anne “Bettie” Barksdale, age 92, passed away Wednesday, June 28, 2017, at Sunnyside Retirement Community. She was reared in Halifax County, the daughter of the late Randolph and Elizabeth Pittman Barksdale.  She was predeceased by her sister, Emily Barksdale Bugg. In 1946 Bettie graduated from Mary Washington College of the University of Virginia. She taught at Halifax High School for several years before beginning employment with the Halifax County Department of Social Services. She continued graduate studies at Tulane University School of Social Work. For 44 years she was employed as a registered social worker in Virginia, North Carolina and Pennsylvania. Upon retirement she was presented with the Meritorious Service Award by the Virginia State Department of Social Services. Bettie is survived by her cousins, Mary “Cookie” Milton and Lucy Conner; and also several special friends. A memorial will be conducted in the Meredith Chapel at Sunny side Retirement Community on Wednesday, July 19, 207, at 2:00 P.m. Inurnment will be held at the family plot in the town of Halifax, on Tuesday, July 18, at 4:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, contribution may be sent to Sunnyside Retirement Community, 600 L University Boulevard, Harrisonburg, VA 22801 to be used for their health Care Unit.
