Susan Melissa Fraser

August 7, 1941 — April 20, 2017

Susan Melissa Fraser

Susan Melissa Charles Fraser was born August 7, 1941 in Jacksonville, Florida.  She was a graduate of the University of Florida and spent her early career as a recreation director in Washington, D.C., and then Miami, Florida, where Susan and Ed returned to be near Susan’s family.  Susan also taught as an elementary school teacher in Miami before becoming a full time housewife with the birth of her children, Charles and then Melissa.  After Charles and Melissa finished college, Susan became like a second mother to her newborn niece, Kimee, and she and Ed relocated to help raise Kimee.  Susan moved to South Boston, VA, in 2008 shortly after the birth of her third of six grandchildren.  Susan was always happiest when all her children and grandchildren were around her.  Susan took pride in her family’s accomplishments and always said it was a full time job to just keep track of who was going where. While a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, Susan also excelled at sewing and embroidery and spent countless hours making smocked Easter and Christmas dresses for the grandchildren.  She was in constant demand during costume season for her creativity and skill.  Susan still also found time for her other passion, reading, and could often be found hidden in a book while the rest of the family was going from one activity to the next. Susan also enjoyed her holidays with the family whether the family’s semi-annual beach trips or in the later years taking her niece to and from college and making sure Kimee was safely arranged. Susan was diagnosed with cancer five years ago and battled the illness as it returned over the subsequent years with dignity and with strength.  With sadness the cancer returned several months ago and did not respond to treatment.  Her heath declined sharply and she passed away on April 20, 2017 with her husband and children at her side.  Susan Fraser is survived by: Her Husband Edmund Everrette  Fraser One Daughter Melissa Ellen Fraser and husband Michael Freshour of South Boston, VA One Son Charles Edmund Fraser and wife Stefanie Tincher of Rockville, MD Beloved Niece Kimberly Margaret Moore of Cambridge, MA Six Grandchildren Madeline Ruth Fraser Freshour, Michaella Lee Fraser Freshour, Maelyn Ellen Fraser Freshour, Johanna Dean Tincher Fraser, Matthew Thomas Fraser Freshour and Reece Erin Tincher Fraser One Brother George Lyle Charles, Jr., and wife Brenda of Dothan, AL Sisters-in-law Nancy Mott and husband Robert of Dillsburg, PA Martha Musson and husband Richard of Middletown, MD Betty Ann Moore and husband Carl of Dillsburg, PA Jamie Fraser of Jacksonville, FL Host of nieces and nephews.   ***Preceded in death by*** Her Parents George Lyle Charles, Sr., and Ruth Verdean Haley Charles   Memorial service will be held Saturday, April 29, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev.
