Mrs. Hallie Anthony Slagle, 90, of South Boston, VA passed away Monday, January 23, 2017 at Sentara Woodview Nursing Home. She was born March 10, 1926 in the Stella community of Patrick County, VA to the late John Virgil Anthony and the late Hallie Ethel Foster Anthony. She was a member of First Baptist Church of South Boston and a former member of the Virgilina Womens Club, Virgilina Fire Department Aux., the Daughters of the American Revolution, Berryman Green Chapter and a member of the Hookie Club. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jack L. Slagle; one sister Elizabeth; and five brothers, John Virgil, Jr., Charles, Clarence, Penn and Thomas. Surviving are her five sons, Virgil and wife Joyce of Columbia, SC, John and wife Gail of South Boston, VA, Barry and wife Connie of Halifax, VA, Garry and wife Jennifer of South Boston, VA, and Scott and wife Lisa of South Boston, VA; three brothers, Douglas, Maxwell and Richard; and eight grandchildren, John, Jr., Alexander, Joseph, Bryan, Bruce, Lindsey, Joshua and Dora. Mrs. Slagle received her Bachelor of Science degree from VPI in 1947 and her Master of Science degree in 1954 in Home Economics. After a short time in retail at the original Thalhimers Store on Broad Street in Richmond, in 1948 she accepted a position as the Home Economics and Science teacher at Virgilina High School. Mrs. Slagle met future husband Jack who was managing a small family grocery store in Virgilina and they married in 1950. Eventually they had five sons. She left teaching in the mid-1950s and was a homemaker. In the early 1960s, with her confidence building support, husband Jack started Slagle’s Fire Equipment Company. With Hallie’s push and Jack’s work ethic they were proud that the business afforded them the ability to send all five sons to college. Funeral services will be held be at 2:00 P.M., Friday, January 27, 2017 at the Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Randy Holmes officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery in South Boston, VA. Visitation will be held from 12:30 until 2:00 P.M. prior to the service.
