Maynard Osborne passed away peacefully on January 22, 2017 at Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital. Maynard was born on November 19, 1935 to Eddie and Mary Francis Osborne in Halifax County. He graduated from Halifax County High School in 1954 and enjoyed getting together with his classmates.Maynard married Nancy Dunkley Osborne in 1956 and moved to Richmond. He joined the Virginia State Police and was stationed in Crewe, Virginia in 1957 where he and Nancy raised their two daughters. After fifteen years with the State Police, Maynard became a Virginia ABC Special Agent for the next twenty years stationed in Crewe and Halifax County. Nancy and Maynard moved to Scottsburg in 1986 and Maynard retired in 1991. After one year of retirement he went to work part time for four years for the Halifax County Sheriff Department as a deputy sheriff assigned to courtroom security.Maynard was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and a current member of the Harding Sunday School Class at Mount Laurel United Methodist Church. He was a past officer and member of the Piedmont Law Enforcement Association and a member of the ABC Special Agent Bureau of Law Enforcement Alumni Association. He was also a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans - John M. Jordan Camp #581. Maynard was a past president and long-time board member of The Halifax Sportsmen's Club. Most of all Maynard enjoyed having his children and grandchildren come stay on our farm.Maynard was preceded in death by Nancy, his wife of 52 years and son-in-law Doug Hammer. He is survived by his sister Frances Martin of South Boston, daughter Debbie and her husband Mark Jones of Virginia Beach; daughter Deanna Hammer of Crewe; granddaughter Elizabeth Hammer of Los Angeles; grandson Turner Jones of Virginia Beach; and granddaughter Kellee Jones Cole and her husband Chad Cole of Charlottesville and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Maynard is also survived by a very special friend, Joyce Francis, who brought much happiness to his life during the past six years.A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, January 28, 2017 at Powell Funeral Home in South Boston. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Scottsburg Fire Department or a charity of one's choice.
