TUCKER, Dr. Henry Joseph, Jr. “Sunny”, a resident of Halifax throughout his life, died at home on June 19, 2016. Born April 7, 1932, he was the son of the late Kate Easley Edmunds and Henry Joseph Tucker of Halifax. A lifelong bachelor, he is survived by his niece Katherine Powell Heller (John) of Atlanta, GA, nephew K. Wayne Powell Jr (Junko) of Ann Arbor, MI and brother-in-law Kenneth Powell of Halifax. His sister Josephine Tucker Powell preceded him in death. Sunny graduated from Hampden Sydney College in 1954 and from the Medical College of Virginia in 1958. After completing his internship at Johnston-Willis Hospital in Richmond, VA, he entered the US Navy as a shipboard physician from 1959 to 1962. He then returned to Johnston-Willis Hospital to complete his residency in general surgery and moved back to his hometown of Halifax, joining the Fuller Roberts Clinic in South Boston in July of 1967 where he worked until his retirement in 1994. Sunny embodied the spirit of the small town doctor throughout his life. He is well remembered by many for his caring bedside manner and his untiring commitment to those in his care. Having spent his early life without access to motorized wheels, he made up for it in his adult life, collecting and caring for numerous cars and airplanes. He shared his passions for cars, houses and travel with many friends throughout his life. In addition to his home in Halifax, he maintained a home in Richmond VA where he cultivated many lifelong friendships. A graveside funeral service will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church cemetery in Halifax at 11:00AM Friday, June 24 followed by a reception with the family at 1047 Mountain Rd. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to The Alzheimer’s Association, Southside Chapter 6350 Center Drive, Suite 102, Norfolk, VA 23502 or St. John’s Episcopal Church Restoration Fund, 197 Mountain Road, Halifax VA 24558.
