Mrs. Nancy Dance Proffitt of Halifax, VA died peacefully on Wednesday, May 18, 2016 at Meadow View Terrace in Clarksville, VA, after a brief illness. She was preceded by her beloved husband of 28 years, John Atkins Proffitt. She was born on December 14, 1940 in Welsh, West Virginia, the only child of the late Ruby Ella Moore Dance and Jimmie Jordan Dance. Mrs. Proffitt graduated from Smithfield High School in Smithfield, NC and was a graduate of Western Carolina College with a BA in sociology. She was the first employed as a social worker in the Halifax Virginia Social Services Department and later the Federal Reserve Bank in Richmond, VA. She and her husband then established their own business helping individuals obtain deserved disability benefits. She is survived by her stepdaughters, Pamela P. McElrath and husband John William McElrath of Richmond, VA and Susan Proffitt Powell and husband Dr. C.L. Powell of Littleton, NC and formerly of Franklin, VA; grandsons, Bryce Hines Powell and wife Meredith of Charlottesville, VA; Dr. Jonathan Randolph Powell and wife, Kathryn of Pittsburgh, PA; and William Percy Scott McElrath of Richmond, VA; great grandchildren, Thomas Atkins Powell and Anderson Roberts Powell; and sister-in-law, Beverly Anne Proffitt of Richmond, VA. Nancy will be remembered as a devoted daughter, wife and grandmother. A memorial service will be held on Monday, May 23, 2016 at 2:00 P.M. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Randy Holmes.
