Elnora (Toot) Wilborn Saunders, a lifelong resident of Halifax County, passed away at Roman Eagle Nursing Home on Monday, May 16, 2016 at the age of 90. She was born in South Boston, VA in 1926, the youngest of John Henry and Maggie Flynn Wilborn’s four children. She graduated from C.H. Friend High School and Philips Business School in Lynchburg, VA She worked as the Burlington plant manager’s secretary and retired from the Commonwealth of Virginia after 25 years as a secretary for the Virginia Adult Probation and Parole Board. She was an active member of the McCanless Memorial United Methodist Church (previously West End Methodist), where she sang in a travelling choir. She loved to write poetry and many of her poems were published by the local papers. She spent her post retirement years assisting the elderly in her community. She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Harold (Pat) Fulton Saunders, two infant children, and her siblings, Cleve Wilborn, Nona Hall and Thelma Saunders. She is survived by two sons, Harold Mark Saunders and wife Linda of Midlothian, VA and David Lee Saunders and wife Diane of Halifax, VA; two grandsons, Allen Mark Saunders and wife Leslie of Sterling, VA and Paul Andrew Saunders and wife Donna of Midlothian, VA; two great grandsons Nathaniel Mark Saunders and Noah Paul Saunders; and a great granddaughter, Natalie Marie Saunders; one step-grandson Henry Carter III and wife Kandace of Madison Heights, VA; two step-granddaughters Carolyn Stenzel of Bethesda, MD and April Fallen and husband Mike of Halifax County; and seven step great grandchildren Kaylynn, Alex, Nicholas, Nevan Carter, Dillon Noblin, Magdalyn, and Brianna Fallen; and several nieces and nephews. Graveside service will be held Saturday, May 21, 2016 at 2:00 P.M. at Oak Ridge Cemetery with the Rev. Michael Osborne officiating.
