Mrs. Peggy Joyce Booker Maddox passed away Sunday, April 24, 2016. She was born on October 4, 1932 and was the daughter of the late Parham Hubert Booker and the late Maggie Mae Pillow Booker of Naruna, Virginia. She was happily and lovingly married to the late James Edward Maddox. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Reba Mae Booker Fox and Linda Loraine Booker Martin, and her brother Thomas L. Booker. She is survived by four nephews, Parham R. Fox, MD of Lynchburg, VA, Thomas B. Fox of Simpsonville, SC, Earl N. Fox of Hope Mills, NC, and Roger A. Booker of Sterling, VA, and by her niece Rita Lynn Booker Stevens of Roanoke, VA. After working at First National Bank in Brookneal, Peggy for years loved tennis and golf at the Halifax County Country Club and with her friends in Sebring, FL during the winter. She and her husband James sang in the choir at her beloved First Baptist Church in South Boston, and continued actively in her choir and church after James passed. She was extremely creative, being a very active flower arranger and member of the South Boston Garden Club and also an artist in oils and watercolor. Kind and caring she passed along her Christian principles with devoted and unconditional love for her family and friends. Even after her stroke she adapted to a happy life at Westminster Canterbury never questioning or complaining of the radical changes to her active life and continuing to enjoy life and spread joy to those around her. She will be missed at the “Amen corner” where her wheelchair was parked. Those of us behind find inspiration and comfort from her life. The family wishes to especially thank Mrs. Virginia Long who, by loving Peggy became part of our family and thanks to all at Westminster Canterbury who became such good friends of Peggy and enabled her to get happiness despite her limitations. The nurses, aids, and physicians of Centra have our highest praise, especially Drs. Wilgus and Stoker and the Palliative Care Team who were of great comfort to us all. Family will have visitation from 6:00 until 7:30 P.M. Thursday at the Powell Funeral Home in South Boston. The funeral service will be at 11:00 A.M. Friday, April 29 at the First Baptist Church of South Boston with interment following at her family plot at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Naruna.
