Nelson Burrus King, Jr.

Nelson Burruss King, Jr. of Mooresville, NC and formerly of South Boston died Saturday, November 28, 2015 from complications of Diabetes. He was born July 24, 1946 in South Boston, a son of the late Nelson Burruss King, Sr. and Rachel McNeely King. He was the grandson of the late George Benjamin and Dorothy Bondurant King of South Boston and Robert E.L. and Callie Hayes McNeely of Danville. A graduate of Virginia Tech, class of 1968, Nelson worked for a number of companies beginning with Burlington Industries in Clarkesville until his retirement from Lowes in 2014. He developed a love of flying at an early age and learned to fly with Frank Sadler as his first instructor. Nelson wanted very much to fly during the Vietnam Conflict; however due to lung problems from a long history of asthma was turned down by both the US Army and the United States Marine Corps. He never lost his love of flying or his Lionel train collection. He spent many occasions walking the Appalachian Trail from Maine to Georgia. Until his health declined, Nelson was a member of the VA Tech Alumni Association in Charlotte, NC and he also volunteered at a local homeless shelter assisting military veterans. He is survived by a son, Andrew Nelson King of Huntersville, NC and two grandsons, Luke Joseph King and Gabe McNeely King also of Huntersville, NS. He is also survived by a sister, Martha Ann Brochcard (Dean) of Dillwyn, VA and a brother, Henry McNeely King (Ida Mae) of South Boston. Nelson is survived by one nephew Henry W. “Hank” Wilson (Jennifer) and their 2 children, Rachel Naomi Wilson and Henry Jacob “Jack” Wilson of Fairfax, VA. Also surviving are his aunts Edna King Stone of Blackstone, VA and Sue (J. Douglas) king of South Boston along with an uncle, E. Hobson Meeler of Midlothian, VA and a number of cousins. Anne Marie May King, the mother of his son, of Rocky Mount, NC also survives. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, December 3, 2015 at 12:00 PM at Halifax Memorial Gardens where Nelson’s remains will be buried beside those of his parents with Rev. Raymond Wooten of Black Walnut Baptist Church officiating.
