Mr. S. Owen Howerton, Sr., 75, passed on to his eternal home on July 22, 2015. He was born at home on June 13, 1940 to the late Willie Conner Howerton and William Trent Howerton. His father was killed in an automobile accident in April of 1940. Owen was the youngest of ten brothers and sisters. He worked at J.P. Stevens from 1958 to 1980 when he left to pursue his love of tobacco and cattle farming. After he stopped raising tobacco in 1996, he grew tobacco plants and worked at the Star Warehouse, Victory Warehouse, and New Brick Warehouse. His family always enjoyed his sense of humor and tales about his escapades when he was young. He had the ability to make friends wherever he went and always tried to help the needy. He loved Shady Grove United Methodist Church where he was a member for 13 years. Owen is survived by his wife of the home, Barbara Shields Howerton; son, Stover O. Howerton Jr. and wife Paula; brothers, Trent Howerton and Frank Howerton; grandchildren, Bert Howerton, Brittney Clay, Tristan Howerton, Tea Howerton, Stevey Raey Childress and C.G.Wagstaff; sister in law, Dottie Brown and husband Bob and their daughter Catherine; His first wife Linda Williams Howerton and daughter Dana; three great grandchildren, Autumn, Emma, and Caleb Clay and his beloved dog Pipsqueak. A celebration of life will be held at Shady Grove United Methodist Church on Friday, July 24th at 3:00 PM with Rev. Shayne Estes and Rev. Pat Neilsen officiating. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall immediately following the graveside committal.
