Lawrence Rather

Mr. Lawrence Rather of South Boston, VA passed away Tuesday, December 16, 2014 at The Woodview. He was born in Afton, OK on May 26, 1931 and was 83 years old. He was the son of the late John Wesley Rather and Leda Myrtle Helms Rather and was married to the late Peggy Kent Rather. He was a twenty year veteran of the US Army serving in both the Korean and Vietnam Conflicts and then had another career with the VA Department of Corrections. Survivors include: One daughter Teresa Kay Rogers and husband John of Roxboro, NC One son David Lawrence Rather and wife Anita of Halifax Two Nieces and one Nephew Bea Magee of Tulsa, OK Diane Tiner and husband Jay of Tulsa, OK Jay Rather and wife Linda of Tulsa, OK Four grandchildren Joshua Rather and wife Samantha of Halifax Taylor Rather of Halifax Caitlyn Rogers of Roxboro, NC Morgan Rogers and wife Sarah of South Boston Great grandchildren Macy Blanks, Morgan Paige Rogers, and Sawyer Rogers He was preceded in death his wife, Peggy Kent Rather and one son, John Wesley Rather A graveside service with Military Rites with be held on Friday, December 19, 2014 at Halifax Memorial Gardens at 2:00 PM with Rev. Norman Talley officiating. The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home on Friday from 12:30 PM - 1:30 PM and other times at the home of David and Anita Rather, 1151 Woodbourne Road, Halifax, VA.
