It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Henry "Hank" E. Bruining, 63, of South Boston, VA, on December 5, 2014. Hank was admired and respected by all who knew him. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, a devout Christian, and an active supporter of local education associations. He leaves behind his wife, Marilyn, four children, seven grandchildren, three sisters, and countless friends, to mourn him. Hank was born and raised in Maywood, NJ, where he met the love of his life, Marilyn, his bride of 42 years. Hank and Marilyn shared an extraordinary life together and their marriage served as a beautiful example for their children and grandchildren. For the past 12 years he worked as the Senior HR Manager for the Dollar General Corporation in South Boston. In addition, he was an active member of the community, serving on the Board of Directors for the Tri-County Community Action Agency and the Halifax Public Schools Education Foundation. His commitment to education was also evident through his work with the Volunteer Literacy and Workforce Training Programs of the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center. Above his civic service, was Hank's abiding love for and deep faith in Jesus Christ. He was an enthusiastic member and former elder at Faith Community Church of South Boston. Hank's greatest joy was his treasured family. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; his sisters, Elizabeth Arruda and husband Bruce, Wilma Bruining and husband Scott Chase, and Anne Mi Ok Bruining; his children, Matthew Bruining and wife Amy, Melissa Teeter and husband Michael, Nicholas Bruining and wife Kathryn, and Samuel Bruining and wife Carey; and his grandchildren, Jack, Adah, Benjamin, Noah, Madeline, Katelyn, and Caleb. In heaven he is now reunited with his parents, Nicholas and Elizabeth Bruining; his mother-in-law, Minnie DeVries; and his daughter, Jennifer. A funeral service to memorialize Hank is scheduled for Friday, December 12, 2014, at 11:00 am at Grace Baptist Church, 1058 Buckshoal Rd., Virgilina, VA, followed by a private graveside interment. The family will receive visitors immediately before the service at 9:30 am. A reception following the service will be held at Faith Community Church. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the Benevolent Fund at Faith Community Church and the Halifax Public Schools Education Foundation.
