Mrs. Zelma Newton Howerton, a long-time resident of the Hyco Road community, passed away peacefully at the Woodview July 22, 2014, surrounded by family and friends. Mrs. Howerton was born in Mecklenburg County, VA on January 5, 1929 and was 85 years old at the time of her passing. Mrs. Howerton was a devoted member of the South Boston Seventh Day Adventist Church. Mrs. Howerton is survived by her husband of 63 years, Mr. Willie T. Howerton of the Woodview, by her adoring sons, Douglas R. Howerton of Orange, CA, William D. Howerton and Carl E. Howerton of South Boston, VA. She is also survived by her sister, Laura Newton Crowder of Scottsburg, VA five Grandchildren, Travis, Casie, Ashley, David Wayne and Samantha, and two Great-Grandchildren, Joshua and Ryan, all of South Boston, VA. Mrs. Howerton also is survived by her North Carolina family, Sister-in-law Mary Newton and nieces Elizabeth, Marcie and Cindy, of whom she was very fond. Also survived by many other family members and friends. Mrs. Howerton was pre-deceased by her son Richard L. Howerton of South Boston, parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. L. Newton of South Boston, a Brother, Mr. William C. Newton of Rougemont, N.C., and a sister, Mrs. Thelma Newton Busick of Cluster Springs, VA. Family visitation will be Thursday July 24, 2014 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 25, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Darry Campbell of the South Boston Seventh Day Adventist Church officiating.
