Elmer James (Jim) Moore

Elmer James (Jim) Moore, Jr., formerly of Gastonia, N.C. passed away peacefully September 17, 2013 surrounded in love by his daughters and the staff at Woodview Nursing Home in South Boston, Virginia. He was born November 13, 1930 in Fort Pierce, Florida to Elmer James Moore, Sr., and Thelma Louise Moore. The family moved to Atlanta where he lived until attending the University of Georgia, graduating with a Business Administration degree. He was a lifelong Bulldog fan. He enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard where he served as a communications officer. Initially stationed in Boston Harbor, Massachusetts aboard the Sorrelle, he later deployed to the North Atlantic and served two of his last years during the Korean War. He met his wife, Helen Louise Colquitt of Decatur, Georgia while on leave and they were devoted to each other for 52 years, raising four daughters. A passionate volunteer, he assisted his wife as a Girl Scout leader, served on the board of the Gaston County Mental Health Association, was a long-time precinct chairman in Gaston County and a member of the local Masonic lodge. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Gastonia where he was in the choir and served in several leadership roles. He studied Saint Paul, and often cited "If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing." He spent his career in the insurance business, including his own company, Jim Moore Insurance, Inc., of Gastonia. He instilled in his children the importance of service, a well-timed joke, and not judging a book by the cover. Jim was preceded in death by his parents Elmer Moore, Sr., and Thelma Moore; wife, Helen Moore; daughter, Ronda L. Wilson; and son-in-law, William P. Marshall. He is survived by Lynn Marshall and Earl Crowe of Halifax, Va., Rebecca Moore of Raleigh, N.C. and Nickie Hinson of Gastonia, N.C.; grandsons Aaron Hinson of Gastonia, Brandon Marshall and Roger Crowe of Halifax, Va.; and granddaughters Brittnay S. Marshall of Raleigh, N.C. and Amy N. Marshall of Halifax, Va.; and grand dog, Blazie. A memorial will be held in Gastonia, N.C. at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family request donations to Halifax Regional Hospice 2204 Wilborn Avenue, South Boston, Va, 24592 or your favorite non-profit/charity.
