Lois Glass Powell Harris died Sunday, May 5, 2013 at home surrounded by her family and long-term caregivers. Mrs. Harris was born May 18, 1918 in Halifax County, VA to Annie Glass Powell and Charles William Powell. She was married to the late Dr. William Boatwright Harris. She is survived by four children: Susan H. Perkins and Anne W. Harris of South Boston, William B. Harris, Jr. (Lisa) of Morristown, TN, and Robert C.P. Harris (Karen) of Halifax. Mrs. Harris is also survived by nine grandchildren: Elise Mebel, Maui, HI, Lee Mebel, Denver, CO, Hunter and Harris Thompson, South Boston, VA, and Eva, Ashlin, Brian, Emma, and Abram Harris of Morristown, TN. Also surviving are sisters-in-law Jo Powell and Regine Archer of Salem, VA, 3 nieces and 2 nephews. Mrs. Harris was pre-deceased by her brothers Lawrence Jefferson Powell and Benjamin Watkins Powell of Salem, VA as well as son-in-law Lionel Parker Perkins, Jr. of South Boston, VA. Mrs. Harris was a graduate of C.H. Friend High School, and attended both Longwood College and Pan-American Business School. She was the owner and operator of Harris Antiques for many years where her customers became her friends. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church for over 65 years, and was an active member of the Episcopal Church Women until her health declined. Graveside rites will be held on Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at 11:00 AM at Oak Ridge Cemetery with The Very Reverend Susan Grimm officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to a charity of the donor's choice.
