Mrs. Virginia Slayton Anderson, retired Executive Director of the South Boston Retail Merchants Association died Thursday, October 4, 2012 at the Woodview Nursing Home. Mrs. Anderson was born June 3, 1917 in Sutherlin, Virginia and was 95 years old. She was the daughter of the late Nell Waddell and William G. Slayton. She was married to the late William Meades Anderson, Sr. Mrs. Anderson served as president of the Associated Credit Bureau of Virginia and as a member of the Board of Directors for the Virginia Retail Merchants Association. She also served on the Halifax County High School Distributive Education Advisory Board. In 1972, she was nominated as an Honorary Life Member. Mrs. Anderson served as Chairman of the South Boston Electoral Board and as member of the Halifax Community Action Board. She was Vice President of the Parsons Bruce Art Association and a member Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. As a member of the First Baptist Church, she taught Sunday School and served on the Deaconate Board. Mrs. Anderson served on the American Heart Association Board, the Board for the Southside Regional Juvenile Group Home, the Halifax County Mental Health Board and took an active role in the Volunteer Literacy Program. Mrs. Anderson is survived by her son, Dr. William M. Anderson, Jr., her daughter-in-law, Jane Neal Anderson, her three grandchildren, Harper Louise Dawson, Virginia Mason Booth and William M. Anderson, III. Graveside services will be held Thursday, October 11, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. at the Oak Ridge Cemetery with the Rev. Susan Davis officiating.
