Mr. Albert Vernon Zimmermann, Jr. Mr. Albert Vernon Zimmermann, Jr., 89, of South Boston, died September 28, 2012 after a long battle with cancer. Born in Montoursville, PA on June 2, 1923, he was the only child of Sarah Lincoln and Albert V. Zimmermann, Sr. When he was quite young, the family moved to Alexandria, LA. He graduated from Washington and Lee University in two and one half years with a major in physics. Upon graduation, he joined the U. S. Navy and was placed in the V-12 program at the University of Richmond where he met and married Ann Cabell Walters of South Boston, VA. At sea in the Pacific during World War, II, he served as a communications officer on the U. S.S. Goshen, an attack transport ship. He was a landing craft officer and gunnery officer during the Okinawa invasion. Loaded with troops, his ship was to be in the first wave in the invasion of Japan when the Japanese surrendered. Proceeding on, they were one of the very first to drop anchor in Japanese mainland waters. Upon returning to the states, Mr. Zimmermann attended Tulane University School of Law in New Orleans, LA. He practiced law in Louisiana before moving his family to Virginia. For a number of years he was a Hearings Examiner for the Virginia Department of Transportation. In his later years, he enjoyed traveling abroad but his heart was always in South Boston and the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. Mr. Zimmermann is survivied by his wife of 68 years Ann Cabel Zimmermann, three children, Albert Zimmermann, III of South Boston, VA, Ann Cabell Harper of Knoxville, TN and Sarah Helen Greenbacker of South Boston, VA; seven grandchildren, Dabney Jackson Zimmermann of Charlottesville, VA, Ann Cabell Dellacona of Clarksville, VA, John Michael Harper of Charlotte, NC., Clementina Cabell Harper of Blowing Rock, NC, Robertson Walters Greenbacker of Chapel Hill, NC, Helen Cabell Greenbacker of South Boston, VA and John Hall Francis Greenbacker of South Boston, VA and four great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service for Mr. Albert Vernon Zimmermann, Jr. was held Sunday, September 30, 2012 at 2 P.M. at the First Presbyterian Church. The family wishes to thank all those in attendance.
