Ann Spotswood Edmunds

The family of Ann Spotswood Chesley Edmunds is heartbroken by her death on July 27th in Richmond, Virginia surrounded by her family. She was the daughter of Henry Garnett Chesley and Roberta Spotswood Wimbish Chesley. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sterling Edmunds, and her brother, Henry G. Chesley. She is survived by her three children, Sterling Edmunds Jr. (Nancy), Ann Tyler Allen (Roy), and Paul Carrington Edmunds II (Debbie) all of Richmond and, her canine companion, Ned. Ann had seven granddaughters, Chesley Katherine Edmunds, Cabell Marie Edmunds, Paige Elizabeth Edmunds, Carter Carrington Allen, Margaret Spotswood Allen, Grace Sterling Edmunds, and Barbara Ann Edmunds, whom she was very proud of and found great joy in spending time with them. She is also survived by her niece and nephews, Lee Wray, Chip Chesley and James Edmunds.  

Ann graduated from Collegiate School and Hollins College. After college, she married Sterling and became a resident of Halifax County, Virginia for 57 years. She was a homemaker, stock and bond trader, and analyst for the family finances. Her business acumen was unparalleled. Her love of the markets instilled a passion in her two sons to follow in her footsteps with their careers. She recently moved to Westminster Canterbury in Richmond to be closer to her children and grandchildren. 

Ann was the first woman to serve on the Halifax Community Hospital (Sentara) board where she served as treasurer for a number of years. She was an ardent supporter of The Prizery and served on their board. She was a member and served as an elder at First Presbyterian Church in South Boston, Virginia. She was a community literacy mentor and former treasurer of Blue Ribbon Creamery. Ann was an avid golfer and competed in many local tournaments. She was proud to have been a club champion at Halifax Country Club. Ann, her husband, and two sons enjoyed yearly golf sabbaticals to Pinehurst. 

Although a native of Richmond, Ann loved Halifax. Like her husband, Sterling, she was inspired by strong Christian values that she believed were best served by helping those in need and supporting local charities.

A funeral service will be held at First Presbyterian Church in South Boston on August 8 at 11:00. Interment will follow at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Halifax.

The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Parsons Health Center at Westminster Canterbury and Henrico Doctors Hospital Parham for their compassion and excellent care.
