Bertha Lacks Womack

Bertha Lacks Womack of Vernon Hill, VA passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side on November 30, 2023.  She was born in Halifax County, VA on April 16, 1927, and was 96 years of age.  She was the daughter of the late Robert L. Lacks and the late Lucy Hall Lacks.  She was married to the late William Randolph Womack, Sr.  She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church.  Bertha was devoted to her family, loved being outside and working in her flower garden.

She is survived by her children Gail Womack Fultz of Vernon Hill, Brenda Couch (Jerry Throckmorton) of Halifax, and Alan T. Womack of Vernon Hill and one grandchild William Randolph Womack, III of Nashville, TN.  She is also survived by one brother, Robert Berkley Lacks of Richmond, VA, two sisters-in-law Frances Hughes of Brookneal, VA and Geneva Bates of Vernon Hill.  In addition, she leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews, and devoted niece Lucy Mae Berkley.

She was preceded in death by a son, William Randolph “Bill” Womack, Jr., a grandson, Brad Womack and sisters Lena Townsend, Rena Conner, Bessie Lacks, Dorothy Wade, Mary Lacks, Stover Lacks, Lottie Lacks, Eva Lacks and Frances King.

A graveside service with interment at Asbury United Methodist Church in Vernon Hill, VA will be held on Monday, December 4, 2023 at 2:00 P.M. with the Rev. Ken Hanson officiating.  For memorials, please consider Oak Level Volunteer Fire Department, 2019 Oak Level Rd., Halifax, VA 24558.
