  1. Joseph Ferguson, M.D. died peacefully at home on January 17, 2021. He was born in Sikeston, Missouri on September 25, 1949 and was 71 years of age. He was the son of the late Wilson Joseph Ferguson, Sr and the late Ann Henrietta Adams Ferguson.  He was married to Deborah “Debbie” Rodd Ferguson who survives.

Dr. Ferguson graduated from The Choate School in Wallingford, CT in 1968 and Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH in 1972 Summa Cum Laude.  He received his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1976. He proudly served in the United States Navy as a Lieutenant Commander, completing his internship at the Naval Regional Medical Center Portsmouth, VA and his Urology residency at the Naval Regional Medical Center San Diego, CA. In 1984, he joined The Danville Urologic Clinic and established a satellite office in South Boston, VA. Dr. Ferguson was honored to serve his patients for 30 years and was revered for his thoughtful and caring demeanor. He retired in 2014.

Dr. Ferguson was an active member of the medical community including President of the Medical Staff of Halifax Regional Hospital, board member of Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital Board since 1996 including serving as the first physician Board Chairman from 2004-2006, President of Halifax County Medical Society, and President of Virginia Urological Society.

Joe’s love of education and teaching guided his community volunteerism including tutoring in the Adult Literacy Program, serving on the Board of the Southern Virginia Higher Education Foundation for 24 years, serving on the Continuing Medical Education Committee at Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital for 24 years, and volunteering on state and national Continuing Medical Education Accreditation Committees in his retirement.

Joe was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon and elder.  He enjoyed backpacking, fishing, skiing, traveling, playing golf (at least the first 3-4 holes), and above all, spending time with his grandchildren.

Dr. Ferguson is survived by his wife, Debbie Ferguson; his children, Andrew Rodd Ferguson and wife Abbey of Hingham, MA and Ann Ellen Ferguson Pearce and husband Alex of Raleigh, NC; his grandchildren, Wilson James Ferguson, Benjamin Keenan Ferguson, John Weston Ferguson, Ava Catherine Pearce, and Molly Elizabeth Pearce; sisters, Linda Martin (and late husband Randolph) of Columbia, SC and Judith Thom and husband Charles of Roswell, GA; sister-in-law, Linda Rodd; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son John Patrick Ferguson and sister Mary Theresa Ferguson.

A graveside service will be held at El Camino Memorial Park in San Diego, CA at a future date.  A memorial service will be held after the pandemic is resolved.
