Frances Louise Rufus was born on April 14, 1941, to the Late Henry Lee Ferrell, Sr. and Annie Frances Hogue Ferrell in Halifax County, Virginia. On February 25, 2025, Frances peacefully transitioned from earthly labor to her heavenly eternal reward.
At an early age, Frances accepted Christ, was baptized, and served as a lifelong member of New Arbor Baptist Church. Frances attended Halifax County public schools and graduated from Mary Bethune High School. Frances went on to attend college in Bridgeport, CT where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. She also attended cosmetology school and successfully owned a beauty salon for over 30 years. Anyone who knew Frances knew she had the gift for gab, and she never met a stranger. She loved visiting her family and friends. She had a heart for serving and taking care of her loved ones. She loved cooking and was known for, and often received requests for, her peach cobbler, banana pudding, and lemon meringue pie. She loved fishing, thrifting, music, dancing, and laughing.
Frances leaves to cherish her loving memory: her two sons, Joseph Petty and Abdullah Rufus (Jackie) both of Alexandria, VA. Seven grandchildren Beau Rufus, Gabriel Rufus, Molly Rufus, Grace Rufus, Eli Rufus, Noah Rufus, and Daisy Rufus. Three brothers Harvey Ferrell (Sally), James Ferrell (Gertrude), and Benjamin Ferrell (Carolyn) all of South Boston, VA. Two sisters-in-law, Easter Ferrell, of South Boston, VA and Elenor Ferrell, of Danville, VA, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. She will be truly missed.
Frances was preceded in death by her father Henry Lee Ferrell, Sr., her mother Annie Frances Hogue Ferrell, her stepmother Bessie Wood Ferrell, and 4 brothers Harry B. Ferrell, Henry Lee Ferrell Jr., Tommie Ferrell, and Eugene Ferrell.
A funeral service will held on Saturday, March 8, 2025 at 1:00 P.M. at New Arbor Baptist Church with the Rev. Nelson Stamps and Rev. Willis Ferrell officiating. Burial to follow in the family cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, one hour prior to the service at the church and other times at the home, 5094 Lewis Ferrell Rd. South Boston, VA.
