On December 13, 2018, Fred Atkins Palmore of South Boston, Virginia passed away at age 74. He was born in Richmond, Virginia on January 27, 1944.
Coach Palmore graduated from Blackstone High School, where he was a standout athlete, lettering in football, basketball, baseball, and track. He graduated from Ferrum Junior College where he achieved All-American Honors in Football. Freddie received his Bachelor’s degree from East Tennessee State and went on to earn his Master’s degree from Longwood College.
He spent the majority of his teaching and coaching career at Halifax County High School, where he coached baseball, but is best known for his contributions to the football program.
Freddie enjoyed playing golf at Halifax Country Club and attending UVA football games, but his passion lay in coaching and having a positive impact on the young men in our community. He believed that hard work and dedication were paramount to the success of young men.
He was preceded in death by his parents Paul Beville Palmore and Frances Breedlove Palmore and one brother Harold Beville Palmore all of Blackstone, Va. Freddie is survived by his wife of almost 44 years, Michaeleen Hutchinson Palmore of South Boston, VA, three daughters Brandy Arnold (Jim) of Collinsville, VA, Grey Watson (Bill) of Halifax, VA, Michelle Palmore (Josh Shealy) of South Boston, VA and one son Bo Palmore of Danville, VA. He also has four grandchildren Jake, Maggie, Carson Arnold and Hutch Watson, and a sister Christine Vaughan of Darvills, VA and countless number of men who he coached and mentored over his 74 years.
His funeral will be held on Saturday, December 15, 2018 at 2:00 pm at First Baptist Church in South Boston, Virginia, the family will receive friends an hour before the service.
