Gene Adrian Murray died Sunday, April 7, 2019, in Halifax, Virginia after a brief illness. Mr. Murray was born on August 17, 1937, in Virgilina, Virginia, and was the son of Adrian Woodrow Murray and Mary Loftis Murray.
Mr. Murray attended the University of Virginia and graduated from the College of William & Mary in 1963 where he was president of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. After college, he began his career with Burlington Industries in Altavista, Virginia. He later worked in banking, initially for First & Merchants Bank and then later for Central Fidelity Bank, both in Richmond, Virginia. On returning to Halifax in 1984, Mr. Murray was a partner in Brady & Murray Real Estate Appraisals.
Gene Murray is survived by his wife, Byrd Lacy Murray; his sons, Stephen Andrew Murray of London, England, and John Douglas Murray of Jackson, Wyoming; and his sister, Audrey Murray Harris (Bob), of Williamsburg. He is also survived by his faithful and constant canine companion, Sophie.
A service will be held on Thursday, April 11, at 11 am at Beth Car Baptist Church, 25 Church Street, Halifax Virginia 24558. The family asks that those wishing to provide gifts in memory consider his alma mater, the College of William & Mary, or the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, where Mr. Murray was waiter at the King’s Arms Tavern. He remembered this experience with great fondness and gratitude as it helped enable him to meet his expenses to attend William & Mary.
