George Hamilton Bagwell, born on September 2, 1941, in South Boston, Virginia, peacefully departed this world on April 15, 2025. He left behind a legacy that will be lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege to know him.
A veteran of the United States Army, George also served the town of South Boston, Virginia as a city council member and mayor. After graduating from Hampden-Sydney College and law school at the University of Richmond, he proudly served the community during a 54-year distinguished career as an attorney, recently retiring from his private practice.
George’s interests extended far beyond the courtroom. He was known by many as an enthusiast of antique guns, cars, machinery, woodworking, and motorcycles. He was also an avid outdoorsman and competitive marksman—passions that reflected his appreciation for history and craftsmanship. He was known for his unconventional approach and shared stories of his adventures with humor and infectious enthusiasm.
George is survived by his wife Nancylee B. Bagwell; his cherished children: Lucy Bagwell Look (Craig) of Alexandria, VA; Laura Bagwell Otterberg (James) of Greensboro, NC; and Brandon Bagwell (Miranda) of Machipongo, VA. Their lives, forever touched by his wisdom and humor, carry forward his legacy.
His family extends to two stepdaughters, Charlotte Miller (Lewis) of Clarksville, VA, and Elizabeth Howell (Jim) of Tampa, FL, who equally benefited from his loving guidance. Additionally, George was a proud grandfather, with five grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.
He is also survived by his siblings, Don Bagwell, Jr. of Asheville, NC, and Barbara (Cherry) Bourque of Charlottesville, VA, whose memories of their shared upbringing in Halifax will serve as a testament to the legacy of the Bagwell family. Lastly, he leaves behind his beloved and faithful companion, Shadow, who will reside temporarily with Brandon and Miranda’s dogs.
It would be hard to find a person in Halifax County unfamiliar with the sight of George and Shadow on their walks. As we gather to celebrate his remarkable journey, we remember a man whose impact was profound and whose spirit will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of those he held dear.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
