George Allen Briley

Mr. George Allen Briley of Staunton, Virginia (formerly of Virgilina, Virginia) died on April 12, 2025, at the age of 87. George was born in Stony Creek, Virginia, to the late Russell Louis Briley, Sr., and Annie Eugenia Spiers Wilson. For 60 years, he was married to Jean Bradley Briley who preceded George in death.

While in his early 20’s, George served in the Navy aboard the USS Waldron. Upon his discharge, he embarked upon a lengthy career with VEPCO (currently Dominion Energy) from which he retired in 1994. George was also a volunteer firefighter with the Cluster Springs Volunteer Fire Department during this time.

After his retirement, George spent his remaining years working at various places of employment and spending time with family and friends. His church family at Willow Oak Christian Church was an important part of his life, especially during his twilight years.

George Allen Briley is survived by his three children: Robin Gilbert (Robert) of Staunton, Virginia; Alan Briley (Shirley) of Halifax, Virginia; and Wanda Walker  (Harold) of Midlothian, Virginia. He is also survived by his siblings: Ruby Grizzard, Joann Grizzard, Louis Briley, and Fred Briley. Two grandchildren, Christie Harrell and Adam Puckett, as well as four great-grandchildren (AJ, Jace, Carlisle, and Jonathan Harrell) also survive. George was predeceased by his wife, Jean Bradley Briley, and his grandson, Jonathan Brent Smart.

Services for Mr. Briley will be held at Powell’s Funeral Home in South Boston, Virginia, at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 17, 2025. Visitation will take place two hours prior to the service, and burial will take place at Virgilina Cemetery.
