James R. Matthews

James R. Matthews, 93, of River Landing Retirement Community, Colfax, NC (formerly of Vernon Hill, VA) passed away Friday, November 23, 2018.

He was born in Brunswick County, VA on February 17, 1925 to Herbert A. and Rebecca Bugg Matthews. He grew up in Richmond, VA and attended Richmond City Schools.

He served in the United States Navy during WWII. He graduated from the University of Richmond in 1949. He then received his Masters Degree in 1958 from The College of William & Mary.

He taught in Hampton City Schools, Fairfax County Schools and South Boston Schools. He was Principal of Volens, Sydnor-Jennings, Meadsville, Halifax and Sinai Elementary Schools in Halifax County. He served as General Supervisor and also Supervisor of Special Education of Halifax County Schools.

He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, Vernon Hill VA where he served as Sunday school teacher, Superintendent of Sunday School and Lay Leader.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Weatherford Matthews, brother, H. Ogburn Matthews and sister, Nanette Matthew Huband.

He is survived by a son, James R. Matthews Jr., and his wife, Judy of High Point, NC.

Graveside service will be held at Asbury United Methodist Church, Vernon Hill on December 14^th at 11:00 am.
