John "Buck" Marshall Holland, Jr.

John Marshall “Buck” Holland, Jr. 83 went to be with the Lord on February 27, 2020 in Durham, NC. Buck was born on March 22, 1936 in Rustburg, VA. He was a graduate of Halifax County High School, after which he was drafted into the United States Army and served tours in Germany. After his time in service, he worked construction as a heavy equipment operator most of his adult life, and was a cherished employee at Sunshine Mill, in Halifax, VA where he retired after 18 years. An avid gardener, he prided himself on his summer crops that he generously shared with friends and neighbors. He loved to fish, attend the races at South Boston Speedway, and could always be found wherever there was good bluegrass music to be enjoyed.

In addition to his parents, John Marshall, Sr. and Elsie Jones Spencer, he was preceded in death by one brother, Jimmy Holland, and one nephew, Tommy Holland. Buck is survived by his wife of 60 years, Elva Wright Holland, and their five devoted children: Marilyn Holland Shelton (Tim) of Clarksville, VA, Lisa Holland Burton (John Whitten) of Halifax, VA, Pamela Holland Bowen (James) of South Boston, VA, John M. Holland of Nashville, TN, and Jason M. Holland of Halifax, VA.
