Katherine "Kitty" Slayton Shortt

Mrs. Katherine Slayton “Kitty” Shortt of Halifax passed away on January 13, 2025 at the age of 88. She was born in Halifax County, VA on December 6, 1936 to the late Marshall William Slayton and the late Katherine Moore Slayton. Kitty was married to the late Cyrus Wade Shortt.

 She was a faithful member of Beth Car Baptist until her declining health wouldn’t allow. Kitty retired from the City of South Boston Finance Office as an Assistant Treasurer. Upon retirement, she volunteered at the South Boston/Halifax County Museum where she also served as President of the Board of Directors. Kitty loved being active in her community and lending a hand wherever needed. She will be greatly missed.

Survivors include her son, Cyrus William “Bill” Shortt of Halifax; two grandsons, Andrew Michael Shortt and wife Cassandra of Charlotte, NC, and Matthew Wells Shortt and wife Bobbi Jo of Charlotte, NC; daughter-in-law, Kathy Shortt of Charlotte, NC; beloved niece, Mary Marshall Schirtzer of Winter Park, FL; five great grandchildren, Avery, Cole, Asher, Liam and Halle; nieces and nephews, Marshall Slayton, George Slayton, Sara S. Hodges, Robin Hinton, Kim S. White and Angie S. Price. She was preceded in death by her son, Michael Wade Shortt; grandson, Daniel Scott Shortt and her brothers, Franklin Marshall Slayton, William W. Slayton and Charles Wayne Slayton.

  A memorial service will be held Sunday, January 26, 2025 at 3 P.M. at Beth Car Baptist Church with the Rev. Thad Decker officiating. Reception to follow in the church fellowship hall.
