Mary Wilbur Johnson Cassada of South Boston died Wednesday, December 15, 2021, at Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 89. She had enjoyed full independence, health and vitality until about two weeks ago.
Born December 23, 1931, in Reidsville, N.C., she was the daughter of Wilbur Henry Johnson and Mary Belle Hall Johnson. She grew up in Reidsville and in Lawrenceville.
She was married to Leonard Ingram Cassada until his death in 1998.
She had been among the owners of True Value Hardware and its predecessor, Western Auto. A few weeks before her death, she retired from True Value Hardware, where she was dedicated to her work, the staff and the customers.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary Eva Cassada (Thomas McLaughlin) of South Boston, Susan Carol Cassada (Matthew Bassett) of Indianapolis; four grandchildren, Neil Preston Cassada Bassett of Boulder, Co., Wilbur Hall McLaughlin of South Boston, Mary Carrington Cassada McLaughlin of Charlottesville, and Mary Jia Cassada Bassett of Bloomington, Ind.; and cousins Margaret Hall Hayes of Cluster Springs and Andrew Wilkins of South Boston.
A graveside service will be held at Oak Ridge Cemetery on her 90th birthday, Thursday, Dec. 23, at 3 p.m. Visitation is at the gravesite at 2:30 p.m. Powell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
