Mary Ruth Snodgrass Allen of South Boston, VA passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her three daughters on August 28, 2023. She was born on April 17, 1937 in Charleston, WV to the late Arnold Curtis Snodgrass and Nelda Lura Snodgrass. She was married to the late Donald Keith Allen of Allen’s Drug Store for fifty years. Mary was of Baptist faith and attended First Baptist Church of South Boston, VA. She was predeceased by her sister, Margaret Snodgrass Watts, and nephew Barry Watts.
Mary attended Charleston High School, Radford College, and Medical College of Virginia where she met her husband. Not only a homemaker, Mary and her husband opened Allen’s Drug Store in 1967. They loved serving the community, especially while providing Mary’s homemade pies which were a local delicacy. Mary was an avid golfer, President of the Ladies Golf Association for many years, and very proud of being a Club Champion at Halifax County Country Club and Wintergreen Resort. At the age of forty, she took up snow skiing, which she loved and excelled. Even though being very busy with the drug store and her girls’ activities, she and Don found time to show off their dancing skills, especially their “jitterbugging’”. She worked part-time for former Delegate Ted Bennett and was adamant to volunteer as a poll worker for elections.
Mary is survived by her three daughters; Judith Allen, Janice Allen Le (Liem), and Joyce Allen Roberts (David) Eight grandchildren: Nathan Lantor, Mary Lantor Solomon, Samuel Lantor, Ben Le, Rachel Le, Kirsten Roberts, Lee Roberts, Keith Roberts, and four great grandchildren.
