Phyllis Adams Blair passed away on November 14, 2019 at the Madison Medical Resort in Odessa, Texas, at the age of 90 from the complications of a stroke. Phyllis was born at home on November 3, 1929, to Edna Reeves and John Adams in Halifax County, Virginia. The family moved to Gregg County, outside Gladewater, TX, in 1931. They later moved to North Cowden, outside Odessa, TX, and then into town in Odessa.
Phyllis attended school in Odessa, including Odessa High School, but graduated from Turbeville High School in Virginia in 1948. Phyllis and her brother, Crews, visited family in Virginia each summer and she decided to attend high school there her senior year. She attended college at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA, in 1948 and then moved back to Odessa and worked at JC Penney’s and GMAC.
Phyllis married E.T. Blair, DDS, November 21, 1950, at First Baptist Church in Odessa. They attended First Baptist and Phyllis served the Lord through various church activities as a Sunday School secretary, in the kitchen on Wednesday nights and in many other ways known only to the Lord and those she helped. Phyllis continued to attend services at First Baptist until it became too difficult for her to get to church. Our thanks to Randy Beard, her deacon, for helping her get to the Sunday School room and park the car!
Phyllis was a founding member of the Odessa Study Club and attended meetings for many years. She was initiated into Chapter BT P.E.O., a philanthropic educational organization, in 1953 and continued to be a member until her death.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, John and Edna Adams; her husband, ET Blair; and her brother, Crews Adams.
Phyllis is survived by three children: Betsy Blair of Manhattan, KS; Phillip Blair and wife Lisa of Abilene, TX; and Sallie Blair of Midland, TX; 11 grandchildren: Amy Blair, Abilene, TX; Ashley Tetzlaff and husband, Mark Tetzlaff, Albion, WA; Jason and wife Laura, Waco, TX; Jonathan, Waco, TX; Angela, Austin, TX; Jeremy, Wiesbaden, Germany; Josiah, Washington state; Jordan, Camp Pendleton, CA; Anna, Joshua and Alecia, Abilene, TX; and three great grandchildren: Abigail, Joanna and Grace Tetzlaff.
A memorial service will be held at Hubbard-Kelly funeral home at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 17, 2019. Interment will be at 11:00 a.m. November 21, 2019, at First Crossroads Baptist Church in South Boston, Virginia, where she will rest next to her parents.
