Prasit Thanaporn

Prasit Thanaporn of Halifax, VA passed away on September 20, 2023 at the age of 81 at Duke University Hospital.

He was born in Rayong Province, Thailand on August 16, 1942.  The son of the late Pood and Sangvein Thanaporn, he graduated from Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok and earned his MD from Siriraj Medical School in 1968.  After moving to New York City to complete his medical training at Mt. Sinai and Harlem Hospitals, he met and married Bunleng Liyavanija before pursuing a residency in obstetrics & gynecology at Maryland General Hospital in Baltimore.

In 1974, Dr. Thanaporn and his family moved to Virginia where he joined South Boston Clinic (later renamed Medical & Surgical Associates of South Boston), practicing there for 16 years.  After two years with Hopewell OB-GYN near Richmond, VA, he and his wife returned to Halifax County in 1992 when he joined Fuller-Roberts Clinic.  He continued to serve the community until his retirement in 2011, delivering more than a thousand babies during his 37-year career.

 
In his spare time, Dr. T enjoyed perfecting his golf skills at the local courses and trying new restaurants recommended to him by friends and acquaintances.  In his retirement, he and his wife traveled widely, exploring the US and several other countries, usually in the company of friends and family.  He delighted in a good joke, appreciated a tasty meal, and could often be found listening to music from his youth back home in Thailand.

 
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Bunleng Liyavanija; a daughter, P. Kay (Jason), of Decatur, GA; a son, Porama (Suzanne) of Ann Arbor, MI; and two grandsons, Adam and Thomas.  He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and a son-in-law, Jason Pernice.

A private cremation ceremony took place on September 30, 2023.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 am, Saturday, October 14, 2023, at Powell Funeral Home, South Boston, VA.
