Rachel Ellen Jones, 87, passed away on June 7, 2022, after a tough battle with Parkinson’s Disease and Lewy Body Dementia. She was preceded in death by her parents, Newman and Rachel Pugh Jones, and her brother Paul M. Jones. She is survived by 3 nephews, Douglas V. Jones (Frances), of Glen Allen, VA, Gordon K. Jones and Michael D. Jones (Shauna) both of Goose Creek, SC. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Eloise K. Jones, of Summerville, SC, and a number of cousins and several great nieces and nephews. Rachel was an RPN, having completed her formal education at Mary Washington College (class of 1957) and Johnston-Willis Hospital School of Nursing, Richmond, VA. Originally from South Boston, VA, she lived most of her adult life in Durham, NC, leading a life of service to others as a nurse at the Veterans Administration. Outside her professional endeavors, Rachel traveled extensively and enjoyed a wide circle of special friends most of whom she outlived. She had a memorable sense of humor and was fiercely independent. To win favor with Rachel all you had to do was offer her something with chocolate. She never married but cared deeply for both her immediate and extended family. Rachel was a member of First Baptist Church in South Boston, VA. A graveside service will be held on Friday, June 17, 2022, at 2:00 P.M. at the Virgilina Cemetery, Virgilina, VA with the Rev. Susan Davis officiating. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Transitions LifeCare, Raleigh, NC, (Transitionslifecare.org/donate); St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (Stjude.org/donate) or the American Parkinson Disease Association (apdaparkinson.org). The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff of Croasdaile Village Care Center and the incredible hospice team from Transitions LifeCare. Finally, the family wants to thank and recognize two very special friends and neighbors of Rachel’s, Carolyn and Marie, your love and devotion to Rachel will never be forgotten.
