Samuel Baxter Wilson, Jr.

Samuel Baxter Wilson, Jr, born July 23, 1929 at Birchland Farm, Halifax County, VA passed away Monday, October 11, 2021. He was a graduate of VPI with a BS in General Agriculture, served in the US Army as a 1st Lieutenant for several years and was an atomic vet. He was a farmer and conservationist as well as an active member of his community. He worked for the USDA Soil Conservation Service (SCS) and was a member of Virginia’s Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) Board where he served as vice chairman and chairman. He was a member of Oak Level Presbyterian Church all his life where he served as elder and treasurer for a few decades. He was a charter member of the: Oak Level Volunteer Fire Department, Spring Valley Swimming pool association and Wilson Memorial Ruritan club, and at the later he also served as Vice-President, President, treasurer, zone director and Lt. Governor of the Dan River District. He earned the Tom Downing Fellowship Award in 2000. He served on the on the Halifax County School Board and as the Oak Level Presbyterian Church Institutional Representative to the BSA Troop 410 since it’s inception. He was preceded in death by his parents Samuel Baxter and Leta Ruth Negaard Wilson, his sister Harriet Wilson Terry and his wife Kathryn Terry Wilson of 69 years. He is survived by his sister Sally Wilson Ragland Crews, his son Samuel Baxter Wilson, III (Lisa), daughter Kathy Wilson Porterfield (David), four grandchildren; Samuel Baxter Wilson, IV (Laura), Michael James Wilson, Daniel Thomas Porterfield, Nancy Porterfield Kren (Greg), and two great-grandchildren; Logan Bruce Kren and Levi Joseph Kren, and extended family and others who have become family over a lifetime well lived. Special thanks to Linda (Peanut) Unroe and Chanel Barbour (caregivers). Graveside service will be at Oak Level Presbyterian Church Cemetery Saturday, October 16th at 3:00 pm with the Pastor Russell Terry and Rev. Dr. Donald Nance. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to Oak Level Volunteer Fire Department, 2019 Oak Level Rd., Halifax, VA 24558 or Oak Level Presbyterian Church and/or their cemetery fund, 1243 Oak Level Rd., Halifax, VA 24558.
