Waclaw "Vas" K. Bakierowski

Waclaw K. “Vas” Bakierowski, of Halifax passed away on April 14, 2025 after a short illness.

Vas was born in Chicago on July 4, 1954, to Waclaw and Lisaweta Bakierowski, who came to the United States as “displaced persons” after World War II. In time, first school and then his work took him to Northern Virginia, where he spent most of his life. Prior to his retirement in 2009, he served for 32 years with the U.S. Government, including the Central Intelligence Agency, the Department of the Air Force, and the National Reconnaissance Office. At his farewell, his summary of his career was suitably uninformative: “I came, I saw, I am out of here.”

Having, as he put it, “gone native’ in the Old Dominion, Vas came to the Southside when he left Federal service. In his spare time, he enjoyed deer hunting, gardening, and the study of the battles and campaigns of the Army of Northern Virginia. He and wife were parishioners of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, in Youngsville, NC.

He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Bakierowski.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, April 16, 2025 at 4:00 P.M. at the family cemetery beside his beloved wife, Mary.

Those wishing to give memorials are encouraged to make a contribution to the poor box of their church or to some other appropriate charity of their own choice.
