Walter Wood Hankins, III

Mr. Walter Wood Hankins, III of Vernon Hill, VA passed away Saturday, August 25, 2018 at his home.  He was born February 11, 1943 in Halifax County, VA and was 75 years old. He was the son of the late Walter Woods Hankins, Jr. and the late Hallie Holt Hankins

He was a lifetime member of the Ingram Christian Church and enjoyed spending time with his family.  He graduated from Virginia Tech in 1965 with a degree in electrical engineering and went straight to work for NASA and retired in 2002.  While at NASA he worked with the original Mercury seven astronauts and also worked on the Apollo 13 mission.  Mr. Hankins also presented at a NATO conference in Holland.

Three Great-Nephews, Evan Gilbert and Preston and Baker Estes

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 28, 2018 at 2:00 P.M. at the Oak Level Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Eddie Walker and the Rev. Dr. Jeff Kisner officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the Oak Level Presbyterian Church and other times at the home of his sister, Jane Moore 250 High Point Rd., Keeling, VA.
