William Hubert McCaleb Sr.

William Hubert McCaleb, Sr. of South Boston, VA passed away March 13, 2025, at the age of 80. He was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on October 3, 1944, to the late Hubert McCaleb and the late Lucille Ruby Rollins McCaleb. He was married for 60 years to Shirley Ann Andress McCaleb who survives.

A proud veteran of the United States Federal Government, William retired after 32 years of dedicated service to the F.B.I. and the United States Postal Service. He further contributed to his community through his involvement with the Virginia Cooperative Extension, where he served from 1997 to the present, sharing his knowledge and passion for horticulture.

William’s educational journey included studies at Louisiana State University, George Washington University, Oklahoma State University, the Federal Accident & Claims Investigative School, and the U.S. Postal Service Management Academy.

His career extended beyond government service, with roles at the Department of Commerce Census Bureau (1999-2000), Southside Virginia Community College (2001-2003), Longwood College (2001), and The Sunshine Group (Bayer Advance Chemical) as a consultant (2004-2005).

An active member and leader in numerous organizations, William served as the Virginia State President of the National Association of Postal Supervisors, President of the Virginia Master Gardener Association and Southside Master Gardener Association, and Vice President of the Southern Virginia Botanical Gardens. His commitment to his community was evident in his involvement with the Virginia Nursery and Landscape Association’s Beautiful Gardens Committee, Halifax County Improvement Council (Education Chair), Halifax County Farmers Market Association (Board Member), and as a 4-H Adult Volunteer Leader since 1997.

William was a devoted member of First Baptist Church of South Boston, where he served as a Deacon, Diaconate Chairman, Properties Chair, and Stewardship Committee member. He also contributed to the Halifax County Fair Committee, Halifax County Courthouse Grounds Committee, and was a dedicated leader with the Boy Scouts of America for nearly three decades.

A funeral service will be held at Powell Funeral Home Chapel on Thursday, March 20, 2025, at 2:00 PM, with Rev. Bill Boelte officiating. The family will receive friends the evening prior at Powell Funeral Home from 6:00-7:00 PM.
