William Morgan Miller, Sr.

Loving husband, devoted father, faithful son and friend to all, William Morgan Miller, Sr. passed away peacefully at home on August 31, 2022, at the age of 97 with his family by his side. Bill lived with the love of his life Helen Jordan Miller in South Boston, VA. He was born August 24, 1925 to Frank T. and Cordelia Burns Miller in Meadville, PA. and was predeceased by his parents; three brothers, Jack, Robert and Gene; and his beloved son, William Morgan Miller, Jr. William Morgan Miller, Sr. is survived by: His Wife of 72 years Helen J. Miller Four Children Dede Miller Nelson (Allen) of Cary, NC Lydia Miller Sigillito (John) of Park Ridge, NJ John Miller (Vicky) of Oviedo, FL Laura Miller Leal (Tony) of Powhatan, VA Daughter-In-Law Heidi Miller of South Boston, VA Ten Grandchildren Elizabeth Hamilton (Patrick), Andrew Nelson (Jennifer), Timothy Nelson (Katie), Amy Sigillito, Jack Sigillito, Jordan Miller, Will Miller, Zach Miller, Mary Grace Leal (Fiancé Brad), and Katie Leal. Three Great-grandchildren James, Connor and Ellie Nieces and Nephews A host of devoted nieces and nephews Bill was a man who lived his faith daily and has been an active member of St. Paschal Baylon Catholic Church for over 68 years. Bill was a stranger to no one and was always the first to welcome a new visitor to the church. He and Helen have been godparents to countless children through the years. He was a charter member of the local Knights of Columbus Catholic Service Organization, served numerous terms on the Parish Council and regularly hosted church picnics and gatherings at Dryburg, an eclectic cabin he refurbished and handcrafted with love over a 40-year period. Bill had a passion for restoring old buildings and was also involved in numerous community organizations as a 75-year member of the Elks Lodge #1067, a past president of the South Boston Jaycees, and member of American Legion Post 8. Bill always had fond memories of his days in the U.S. Navy, enlisting before his high school graduation and serving until the end of World War II in 1946. Much of his time was spent at Pensacola Air Station where he was an Aviation Machinist Mate. With his strong entrepreneurial spirit Bill saw opportunities that others might not have visualized. He and Helen arrived in South Boston in 1954 where he leased and managed the John Randolph Hotel. He later purchased City Ice and Coal, which eventually morphed into an industrial crating business. Many also knew him as the manager of the Staunton River State Park Pool for over two decades, where he instilled the value of hard work in many local youths he employed over the years. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Saturday, September 3, 2022 at 11:30 AM at St. Paschal Baylon Catholic Church with the Reverend Father Raner Lucila officiating. Burial to follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery with Military Rites. The family will receive friends Friday, from 4:00 until 6:00 P.M. at Powell Funeral Home.
