Our Story

"Our Family Serving Yours"

Powell Funeral Home started in the Rodden community in 1923 when brothers Walter Powell and Leslie Powell incorporated the selling of caskets into their general store. Soon a truck was purchased and the caskets would be delivered to the homes of those who purchased them. The Powell brothers would dress the deceased and place them into the casket. Next a combination ambulance/hearse was purchased and those services were offered in the Rodden/Meadeville areas.

In 1925, Walter Powell attended the Renouard School of Embalming in New York, obtained his embalming license, and soon offered that aspect of service to their growing business. In 1932, they opened a funeral home in downtown Halifax and another brother, Sam Powell joined the business. In 1937, Leslie Powell opened a funeral home in the Volens community and in 1948, the brothers purchased the J.S. Owen Funeral Home in South Boston. In 1952, the move was made to the current location on Wilborn Avenue in South Boston. The Halifax funeral home was soon merged into the South Boston location and in the late 1960s, the Volens branch was closed and merged into the South Boston location. Each of the founding Powell's had a son which joined into the funeral business. Second generation funeral directors and business owners were Kenneth Powell, Leslie Powell Jr., and Carrington Powell. Currently, Powell Funeral Home is under the direction of third generation funeral directors and embalmers Leslie Powell III and Robert Powell. The Wilborn Avenue location was remodeled in 1972 and again in 1998. Today, Powell Funeral Home offers their clients traditional and non-traditional services, pre-arranged services, cremation, memorial, and military services.
